7.  A MAN WITH A CARDBOARD SIGN

There’s a man with a cardboard sign on the corner down on the street.

Said he needs a little help, a little something to eat.

He takes a bow, gives a smile and tips his hat.

But ain’t nobody stopping ‘cause they ain’t fallin’ for that.

Most think he’s a beggar, he’s a bum and he’s got to be up to no good.

Don’t know how they know that, or how they think they could.

Maybe he’s a good man runnin’ short of rope,

And maybe he ain’t beggin’, just looking for hope, looking for hope.

There’s a man with a cardboard sign on the corner down on the street.

Said he needs a little help, a little something to eat.
